Underglaze – Royal Purple

The Chrysanthos Underglaze range is precisely what the name implies! It is your trusty, opaque underglaze that can be applied beneath a clear glaze to ensure your masterpiece is food-safe. No worries if you decide not to use a clear glaze; the underglazes will still look great with a beautiful matt finish for decorative ware.

Schools, studios, and education centres most love the Underglaze range. This affordable, non-toxic product is easy to use and produces excellent results. Its user-friendly nature makes it ideal for screen printing, with no additives necessary.

Chrysanthos Underglazes come in an extensive range of colors. When applied with precision to greenware or bisqueware, they deliver flawless, opaque coverage without streaks:

  • For greenware, simply fire the clay to bisque temperatures, then apply a compatible clear glaze and refire to seal the ceramic piece.
  • As for bisqueware, ensure that the Underglaze decoration is completely dry before glazing over and firing to the recommended gloss temperatures for a pristine finish.
  • Most underglazes may be left unglazed to create a matt look similar to engobes. If fired at a higher temperature on the appropriate clay body, they may result in a slightly satin appearance. When used in this manner, they are ideal for non-functional ware.

For the best results, use a soft-bristled brush of appropriate size when applying color. A generous-sized brush will help minimize streakiness and ensure an even application, especially when covering larger areas.

To achieve the optimum outcome, apply 2-3 coats of Underglaze using a well-loaded brush. Make sure each coat is completely dry before applying subsequent coats at right angles to one another (crosshatching).

Underglaze colors are meant to be used straight from the bottlebut they can also be sprayed or sponged. You can add clean water to achieve different finishes or adjust the consistency for spraying.

Note: Please note that when using the high bisque/low gloss firing method common in the hobby industry, applying Underglazes onto bisque and glazing directly over the unfired decoration (before firing to the lower gloss temperatures) may result in a less vibrant color. This is because the Underglazes won’t have been exposed to the higher heat during bisque firing. However, if your practice is to low bisque/high gloss, then color representation will be the same for both bisque and greenware applications.

Chrysanthos Underglazes have a broad recommended firing range and most will fire between cone 06 (999°C) and cone 10 (1,305°C).
