We’re beginner Friendly and here to help (FAQ)
Raku Glaze must be applied to mid fire or stoneware bisque.
The painted bisque is then fired to a very low temperature of Cone 010-06. When the kiln has reached that temperature, remove the piece from the kiln while it’s still hot (safely, please!), and place it into a metal container that has combustible organic material and close the lid to achieve reduction.
After that’s cooled, you can remove your piece, and place it in water. Scrubbing the piece with a wire brush can also help remove any unwanted material.
Then your piece is ready to admire! Remember, these are not food safe pieces.
The Raku Glaze is specifically formulated to melt at lower temperatures than your standard glazes.
They are also designed for rapid cooling and reduction, which gives them these ‘out of this world’ effects that normal glazes do not achieve. But also means they are not food safe. You can’t have it all, hey?!
