Ultra Stains are fine powdered pigments—a ceramic artist’s best friend! Versatile and powerful, they offer endless possibilities in your creative toolbox.
Mix them into clear glaze to achieve transparent colors in varying intensities, wedge them into clay or add them to liquid slip to create colored clay bodies, or use them like underglazes for washes and vibrant decorative effects. Ultra Stains can also be combined with underglazes to unlock even more creative potential!
Hot Tip: It goes without saying (but we’re going to say it anyways), test your creative ideas before diving straight in. Because Ultra Stains are so flexible – testing is an essential part of learning how these incredible colors will work for your style of pottery!

You sure can! Just make sure to mix colors within the same Firing Ranges or colors will burn away leaving you sad and confused – and we don’t want that. Only happy tears please!
The Ultra Stain range has different firing temperatures based on the color. They all fall into one of these:
- Cone 06 (999°C) – Cone 03 (1,101°C)
- Cone 06 (999°C) – Cone 6 (1,222°C)
- Cone 06 (999°C) – Cone 10 (1,305°C)
You can refer to the trusty filter above to see which color will work for you!
The amount varies depending on the desired intensity. As a general guide:
- For glazes, start with 5-10% Ultra Stain by weight and adjust as needed.
- For coloring clay bodies, 1-10% Ultra Stain is typical—higher percentages create more vibrant colors but may affect workability.
Remember, test test test!
Yes! Mix Ultra Stains with a medium like water, gum solution, or a glaze base to create washes or detailed painted effects.
Yes, some Ultra Stains can shift depending on the firing temperature, atmosphere, and base glaze. Test firing is recommended to ensure the final result matches your vision.
Nope! They work with most clay bodies and glazes, but certain colors may behave differently on white vs. dark clays. A test tile will help you see the effects before glazing an entire piece.
