Underglaze in so many ways.

Five liquid ranges, plus our awesome chalk and pencil options.

The power of one. Just pure, solid colour, no tricks or pooling effects here. Like your glaze straightforward and classy, this one is for you. Keep it sleek on low, mid, or high fire pieces.

The ultimate wildcard. With these glazes, every piece is one of a kind.  Throw in some crevices, experiment with firing temps, and watch your art do its thing.

The show stopper. Glorious crystals bringing in the wow factor! Available in low and mid-fire, these beauties can craze like nobody’s business, so maybe don’t serve up dinner on them. But as eye candy? Next level.

For work that pops (literally). These glazes create a raised, textured effect that doesn’t flatten out in the firing. Great for linework, sponging, or even a little palette knife action. Works wonders at low or mid-fire.

Color treat, without the heat. These bad boys don’t go near a kiln – just like regular acrylic paint, but made for bisque. Perfect for kids’ programs and bisque art parties; just paint and go, no firing required.

Lock it in, for the win. The final seal! Work so good you want to eat off it? Food-safe option is for you. Just like your stuff shiny? We’ve got your back at low, mid, or high-fire.

Keep the studio stocked. For high-volume glaze fiends who want to minimise waste. Buy in bulk and mix as you need. Awesome way to get a little more bang for your buck.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Look, ceramics is hard. Sometimes it feels like there are more questions than answers. Don’t worry, we’ve got you baby!

We’ve gathered the most common questions we have been asked and shared our answers below. Dive in, and if you still need a little help, we’re just a message away!

General Product Information

Detailed Product Information

We have an amazing product information manual available for your reference. This contains everything you need to know about Chrysanthos products! If we have missed anything or you have further questions, send us an email.

Most importantly, before using the Chrysanthos range ensure your kiln is calibrated correctly and you have read the instructions on the bottle.

Shelf Life

We’ve done our best to ensure our products last for as long as you need to use the entire bottle! Be that 1 month or 5 years! Store them out of direct sunlight and avoid contamination. Please don’t use dirty brushes in your bottles or add back any unused underglaze/glaze to the bottle! – You’re just asking for trouble.

Product Warranty

We guarantee all our products for 2 years from the manufacturing date. This is assuming they haven’t been decentered into other bottles.

We know we’ve sterilised everything to avoid contamination of bottles, but we don’t know how your fellow art dealer rebottles products!

If you’re buying our products, always make sure they are in their original bottle.

Underglazes

What is the difference between underglaze and glaze?

There’s great information out there explaining the difference, but we will do our best to answer this in relation to our products!

In short, an underglaze can be applied to greenware or bisque, which will fire matt and require a clear glaze to seal the piece for food safety. Glazes, on the other hand, are applied at the bisque stage and naturally seal the piece with a range of finishes—gloss, matt, satin, variegated—endless options. Take your pick!

We do have some hybrid underglazes in the range, like Café Color Gloss, that must be applied to bisque and fires gloss without a clear glaze. If the whole piece isn’t covered it can be clear glazed – which generally doesn’t happen with glazes.

Can I mix different underglaze colors?

For sure you can mix different colors in the same range! So your One Stroke with another One Stroke. BUT we advise against mixing colors from different ranges together unless you’re a daredevil and test your results before being disappointed with the results on your final piece.

In relation to different underglaze ranges on the same piece, yes, that works! Using the Underglaze range for your solid coverage work and saving the One Stroke for those finer details, we’ll leave all that upto you!

When should I apply underglaze—before or after bisque firing?

For our underglaze ranges, the Underglaze, One Stroke, Café Color, and Café Color H can be applied at both the greenware and bisqueware stages. The Café Color G, Underglaze Pencil and Underglaze Chalk must be applied at the bisqueware stage.

What’s the difference between Underglaze and One Stroke?

The main difference is pigment concentration!

The Underglaze range typically require 3 coats for full coverage, but the One Stroke give you amazing coverage with One Stroke.

Think about using the Underglaze for larger works where one color is all you need, but use the One Stroke for those finer details.

Can I layer different underglaze colors without them smudging?

Sure can! Make sure you give each coat enough time to dry before layering other colors. Patience is the key here guys!

glazes

Why did my glaze come out with pinholes or bubbles?

Pin holing basically is due to the expulsion of gases from the body or glaze due to:

  • Under or over firing.
  • Under firing bisque.
  • Dusk specs on the bisque that stop the glaze from adhering to it.
  • Application too thick.
  • Firing the glaze too quickly.
  • Too much recycled clay mixed with fresh clay.

Bubbling, better known as ‘bloating’ is trapped gas bubbles in the body. Way to reduce this is:

  • Slow the speed of your firing.
  • Reduce your maximum firing temperature.
How can I make my glaze more glossy?

The best way to avoid disaster in making a glaze glossier, is to add a 20-30 minute soak at the top temperature during your firing schedule.

Test, test, test as always before completing your masterpiece.

Can I mix different glazes together?

We wouldn’t recommend mixing the colors from different ranges together, but feel free to work with different ranges on the same piece! Just make sure you stick to the same firing temperatures across the ranges.

Also be aware that some glazes can run during the firing process! So test, test, test.

What makes Raku glaze unique, and how does the firing process affect the final result?

The Raku Glaze is specifically formulated to melt at lower temperatures than your standard glazes.

They are also designed for rapid cooling and reduction, which gives them these ‘out of this world’ effects that normal glazes do not achieve. But also means they are not food safe. You can’t have it all, hey?!

The final result can be affected by many things –  The organic material you use, how many layers of glaze used, how much oxygen is kept out while the piece is cooling. No two pieces are ever the same!

This all depends on the glaze, but you can experience the following:

  • A matt finish instead of a gloss.
  • Bubbling.
  • Pitting (holes in the glaze).
  • Crazing (glaze crackles).
  • Not vitrified meaning not food safe anymore.

stains

Can I mix stain colors together to make my own?

You sure can! Just make sure to mix colors within the same Firing Ranges or colors will burn away leaving you sad and confused – and we don’t want that. Only happy tears please!

Are Chrysanthos stains food safe?

We can’t be the decider of that! So many things can go right or wrong when using raw materials, that you have to be the judge to whether your finished piece is food safe. See any cracks in your work? You betcha, it ain’t food safe!

What is the difference between stains and underglazes?

Underglazes are premade commercial products, that you pretty much know how they will fire and perform.

Ultra Stains are used to make underglazes, and you can find many resources online for underglaze recipes. Make sure to document how you made your dream color palette!

Can I mix your stains with a clear glaze to make a colored transparent glaze?

Sure can! No more than 8-10% is recommended to get a decent result. Any more than this and you are looking at undesirable results!

Depending on the glaze, some colors may disappear (the reds and oranges) – so as always, test, test, test.

What is the firing range for Ultra Stains?

The Ultra Stain range has different firing temperatures based on the color. They all fall into one of these:

  • Cone 06 (999°C) – Cone 03 (1,101°C)
  • Cone 06 (999°C) – Cone 6 (1,222°C)
  • Cone 06 (999°C) – Cone 10 (1,305°C)

You can refer to the trusty filter above to see which color will work for you!

How much Ultra Stain should I add to glaze or clay?

The amount varies depending on the desired intensity. As a general guide:

  • For glazes, start with 5-10% Ultra Stain by weight and adjust as needed.
  • For coloring clay bodies, 1-10% Ultra Stain is typical—higher percentages create more vibrant colors but may affect workability.

Remember, test test test!

Can I use Ultra Stains for brushwork or detailed decoration?

Yes! Mix Ultra Stains with a medium like water, gum solution, or a glaze base to create washes or detailed painted effects.

Will the color change after firing?

Yes, some Ultra Stains can shift depending on the firing temperature, atmosphere, and base glaze. Test firing is recommended to ensure the final result matches your vision.

Do I need to use a specific type of clay or glaze with Ultra Stains?

Nope! They work with most clay bodies and glazes, but certain colors may behave differently on white vs. dark clays. A test tile will help you see the effects before glazing an entire piece.
